Which side of the coin?

First article which I have written some years ago..and modified later on.

November 02, 2005

We fail to answer the ‘the big picture' when it comes to think about life? Where do we fit in to this so called ‘grand scheme of things?’, 'What role do we play in this?’ so many questions and still it remains throughout our lifetime, in the future, maybe never to be answered. One of the questions I need to raise - 'What do you believe when it comes to the fate of humans in the future?' – whether the human race will cease to exist or not, live in peace, no wars nor destruction? How do we know what’s in store for us in the future?

On February 14, 1990 the Voyager craft turned its eyes towards an object, from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers. It was the idea of Dr. Carl Sagan,  the Voyager craft took a snap shot of this object – a planet revolving around the sun. As the image presents to us something wonderful, something amazing - a tiny dot – Planet earth, what Dr. Sagan called the ‘Pale blue dot’. How can this miniature pixel hold billions of people, plant life, animal life, home to all living breathing organic beings?

I quote from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos

“Look again at that dot. That’s here That’s us! On it everyone you everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was; lived their lives ( the stone-aged humans, Galilioes, Buddha, Einstines ). .....every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every corrupt politician..
Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals ( and it never ends…even in the present day..murders, killings..) and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. "

Sun, Earth compared to a Red giant (Red giant stars are stars that have entered the final stages of their evolution)

How true what he has said, most of us fight, argue for land, greed, power. Is this the fate of the human beings? Will we be the first to destroy all humanity or be it by nature itself? Scientist speculates that within in another 5 billion years time, the sun will expand into a red giant engulfing the inner planets including earth. Will we destroy one another even before the sun turns to a red giant? Though some people say that we will survive, that our spices will go on whether earth cease to exist or not. So many tragedies has struck. In the recent months - earthquakes in Indonesia, Pakistan, Tsunami, hurricanes, floods in all forms of catastrophes has stricken many, thousands and thousands of people have lost their lives, thousands remain homeless. People do help the homeless when disaster strikes, but after awhile, everything is just a faded memory, people continue with their daily lives, life goes on as they say! ....quarreling, arguing with insignificant matters, war destruction as usual continues. Will we ever learn any lesson from these catastrophes? To what extent are we putting our planet at risk? We ourselves are some way or the other responsible for such disasters, harming the precious soil we live on and the only place that we can call home, exploiting the planets’ resources, wiping out nature, at one point out or another our planet would not be able to sustain to our ignorance, and will strike back again and again until no hope is left for us.

We ourselves will be responsible for our demise, we cannot blame any other but ourselves, the human species - will they do the right thing? live peacefully, without harming or wiping out each other…unless some kind of force or miracle happens and turn us into selflessness humans rather than being selfishness humans. Will it ever happen? Or the demise of our human race will evolve into a more new intelligent species? More intelligent beings, conscious enough to know not to destroy each other? I wonder…my faith in humanity tends to diminish day by day what my eyes see and what my ears hear – happenings of the world around us.

I truly wish and I hope that the light of humanity will not be taken away, that humans will learn to live peacefully with each other, we will or rather I will never know in my life time..I do not know what the future holds or will there be any future for the human race. In decades to come, maybe one day some intelligent life form will tell a tale about the human race, how they evolved, how they lived, how the human race was almost.. almost destroyed.. I hope not! We need to rekindle the human spirit and the keep light of humanity burning and it begins within ourselves, and cherish the dear life and preserve on the only place we can call home - Planet Earth.
